STEP 1
Mix concrete or hypertufa according to directions, add pigment if desired, then fill the oiled totem stake mold (totem stakes require approximately 1 1/2 dry quarts concrete per mold). Create a small narrow hook by bending an 8-10" length of wire. Press the hook into the wet concrete an inch or so below the top of the mold.
To make finished sconces without a pointed end, simply cut a piece of cardboard or posterboard to fit the approximate width and depth of the mold. Oil both sides then insert into the wet concrete near the bottom of the mold. After the concrete hardens, the pointed end tip will easily detach.

STEP 2
In two days, demold the stake, then allow to cure for another week. The surface can then be painted. Slip on a pair of latex gloves and squirt a teaspoon or two of patio paint into the palm of your hand. Rub the paint between both palms until the paint forms a smooth, even coating. With flattened palms, gently swipe across the raised design surface. Continue applying paint until you're happy with the saturation.

STEP 3
Using a hand, scroll or bandsaw, cut a wooden "shelf" for your tealight or small candle. Measure the dimensions of the candle then cut the wood large enough to comfortably accomodate the candle. The wood (pine, plywood, etc) should be at least 1/2" thick. Epoxy the shelf to the concrete stake and allow to harden. After the wood is painted or stained, your sconce is ready to be hung in the garden!
